Tumblr Staff: Fixing Content Attribution (Once and For All)

Back when we launched two of Tumblr’s most unique features, reblogging and the Tumblr Bookmarklet, we devised automatic “via” links in post captions as a simple solution for attribution. Three years later, this solution has gotten us pretty far. But it’s easy to spot some real shortcomings:

It’s hard.

Ура! Tumblr is now available in Russian.

This localization makes Tumblr more accessible in Russia, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Ukraine, and a host of other countries where we’ve seen new Tumblr communities emerging.

This makes eight different languages that Tumblr supports, with more coming!

You can change your language settings on the Preferences page.
Be sure to also follow the new official Russian Staff Blog.

It’s hard to organize Tumblr blogs by topic. A single one of your blogs may include your personal updates, your art, your opinions, and a YouTube video of a cat speaking Japanese, all in a single day. This has been a real limitation of the current Tumblr Directory. So, for the last few weeks we’ve been experimenting with some brand new tools for exploring Tumblr.

The new Explore page organizes and filters posts by tag. This means that every tagged post has a chance to show up in front of an audience of millions that might not otherwise see it. Think Tumblr Radar by topic.

Up top, the Tumblr Wire makes a return, pulling in featured posts in realtime. Below is a list of popular and trending tags (currently English only, with more languages coming soon). You can also Track these tags to get notifications on your Dashboard when a new post is featured.

Make sure to tag your posts where relevant to help more people find you. You can still look up any tag using the search box on your Dashboard.

We’ve already started finding posts and following blogs that we had no idea existed. Please give it a spin!

Clark went on a harrowing bulldog walk last weekend that lasted nearly 30 minutes and spanned fifteen blocks!

Some moments deserve more than one angle. That’s why we’re ecstatic to give Photosets a huge upgrade today, giving you new levels of control to tell your stories the way you want to.

1) Photoset photos now open in all their high-res glory on the Dashboard and on your blog.

2) You can now pick a layout for your photos to tell the right story.

3) Tumblr Themes can now make Photosets look and work any way you please with a host of new theme variables:

{block:Photoset}
    <!-- Number of photos -->
    {PhotoCount}

    <!-- Integer representation of the layout -->
    {PhotosetLayout}

    <!-- JS array of the Photoset column counts -->
    {JSPhotosetLayout}

    <!-- Each of the Photoset photos -->
    {block:Photos}
        {PhotoURL-500}

        {block:HighRes}
            {PhotoURL-HighRes}
        {/block:HighRes}

        {Caption}

        {block:Exif} ... {/block:Exif}
    {/block:Photos}
{/block:Photoset}

Enjoy!
